I’ve owned 2 of these. This made my 3rd purchase. I love it. Just be sure you are wary of people you lend out to. You may not get them back. Seems they like them, too !They are very hard to find in brick & mortar stores. Thank goodness Amazon carried them.

Doesn’t come sharpened. Looks like they coated the edge to prevent rusting. You will have to file it off and stone the edge. However, once sharp it will cleanly slice through vines and limbs up to 1-1/2″ or 2″. Also the hook end if very convenient for moving felled matter out of your path. The main issues I have with it are that the reach is limited compared to a machete. I had to use both to prevent thorny plants from getting to me. 2nd it is very easy for this to slip out of hand as there are no grooves, moldings or texture on the handle. 3rd it comes with no sheath, only a huge plastic storage container, so its not easy to stow in a backpack, etc. If you want a good grip and sheath you have to pay a premium and buy the nearly identical one Fiskars makes with the Gerber branding.

Bought this for remote camping (BWCA) where bushwacking is required. Tried it out last weekend on a pine tree I’m taking down. Knocked off most branches with a single swing, edge didn’t curl like another machete I had used. The billhook design is awesome – instead of limbs sliding off the end, the hook holds them and slices. Handle gets a little slick, will wrap it eventually; but good product – would buy again.Oh yeah. I am NOT compensated in any way for this review – I bought it to use it.

Need that middle-of-the-road tool that has a longer cutting edge than your hatchet, but can get into tighter places that your machete can’t?? Then this is the tool for you. It made quick work of a major tangle of vines that had taken over the base of a bunch of mimosas — a place that my long machete would not have handled near as easily (if at all). Then I turned to trimming back a couple of dozen low hanging limbs — and with the right swing this jewel would take out a 3/4″ limb with a single pass. I’m thinking that this one is a keeper! Adding it to a Fiskar splitting axe…, and beginning to think that “Fiskar” must be Scandinavian for cool innovative tool. 😉

Very ergonomic, and light. Makes quick work of my weeds around the fence poles and the like when given a proper edge.

Was a bit skeptical about using this in thick brush and that it would hold up well with heavy use, but to my surprise this thing cuts very well. As other reviewers have noted, the one thing that could be inproved is the slippery aspect of the handle. I added friction tape and a wrist strap and now I’m confident in swinging this without it flying away. Really like the curved blade as it pulls you a bit into the cut, unlike other machetes that push you away from the piece you’re cutting. Another surprise for me is that this really seems to keep an edge. After a few hours of hacking away at all sizes of branches and small shrubs I thought it would have to be resharpened, but it was still very sharp.

I decided to try one of these mini brush hooks for clearing trails, and shooting lanes for archery. It could use a bit of sharpening, which I did, but a bigger concern was the slippery handle. Fixed it by twisting some hockey tape to rope the handle, then flat covered the rope. Great traction now. Nice tool!

I had, and lost somehow, the Gerber version of this. I ordered this because it was considerably cheaper, and find I like it a lot more than its predecessor. It has the same type of plastic carrier that the Fiskars woodsman axes use, which I find a lot handier than the Gerber belt sheath. It arrived somewhat dull, but sharpened right up with a little work. This “brush axe” is actually a light short-handled bill hook, and should be used on tall grass and weeds, berry canes, light brush, and small tree limbs. It’s not made for heavy wood chopping. It is lighter and easier to swing than a machete, and the hook cuts even light stuff like grass that bends away from straight blades. I highly recommend it.

I’ve had this for a couple years now and it’s probably one of the best tools I own for dealing with the Himalayan Blackberry and English Ivy on our property. Out of the box it was a fantastic cutter and keeping it sharp isn’t that difficult. The one thing I would say would be nice is a longer handle whether that was something you could attach or another version of this tool entirely. Some of our briars are pretty formidable and being able to reach in and attack the base of the plants would be great, but then again scars build character.
