Use this checklist before buying more gear or rebuilding a kit. The goal is to cover the important layers first, then keep the setup small enough to use.
Core layers
- Water: container, storage, filter, or treatment
- Fire and heat: lighter, backup ignition, tinder, warmth layer
- Shelter: tarp, bivy, blanket, rain shell, or weather barrier
- Light: headlamp, flashlight, batteries, or power bank
- First aid: compact kit, medications, blister care, gloves
- Tools: knife, multitool, tape, cordage, repair items
- Navigation and signal: map, compass, whistle, marker, reflective item
- Food and comfort: compact calories, hygiene, gloves, hat, or dry socks
Fit check
- Does this kit live where it will actually be needed?
- Can the most important items be reached quickly?
- Does every item have a clear job?
- Are batteries charged and consumables current?
- Can someone else in the household understand the kit?
- Is anything heavy, expired, broken, redundant, or confusing?
